and anyone who falls foul will be arrested regardless of any affiliations.
Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri said this yesterday at a passout parade for 283 policemen and women who graduated after undergoing six months training in Harare.
“Those unruly elements with a penchant for violence are strongly warned that the police shall arrest anyone regardless of his or her political persuasion or station in life,” he said.
He said the force was aware that some “misguided elements” had already begun propagating political violence to scuttle the expected referendum on a new constitution and subsequent general elections.
“I wish to categorically state that the ZRP is fully prepared to ensure a tranquil environment before, during and after these vital processes.”
The graduating cops covered subjects such as police duties and investigations, police powers, procedure and the law of evidence, public order and disorder management, human rights, use of firearms, community policing and Zimbabwe’s political history.
Comm-Gen Chihuri said the officers should always remember that, as the custodians of peace, heritage, values and ethos of this country, they were supposed to unequivocally put the interests of the nation before themselves.
He commended the initiative of undertaking recruits to educational tours to liberation war shrines in Zambia and Mozambique as this would help them better understand Zimbabwe’s history. – CR
