MAFIOUS Chihweta fired Highlanders into the lead with a clinical strike five minutes before halftime in their Castle Lager Premier Soccer League clash against GreenFuel at Barbourfields Stadium.
The Bosso hitman pounced on a loose ball in the box and smashed home what would be his second goal for the Bulawayo giants — the only real highlight of a dull and lifeless first half.
Action on the pitch may have been slow, but in the stands, drama was brewing. A group of angry Highlanders fans staged a protest, demanding a new executive and board, accusing the current leadership of misusing club funds.
On the field, the first real chance came in the 27th minute when Chihweta tried a curler from the edge of the box, but it landed safely in Ashley Ryners’ gloves. A freekick minutes later saw Mvelo Khoza whip in a teasing cross, but Ryners was alert again, punching it away.
In the 33rd minute, Reason Sibanda nearly doubled the lead after capitalising on a defensive error by Emmanuel Chikwende, but his shot was heroically blocked by Garikai Dematsika.
Three minutes later, Luckmore Mutumbi floated in a beauty of a cross, only for Sibanda to fluff his lines with a poor finish.
Halftime: Bosso lead, but the battle is far from over — both on and off the pitch!
