A 12 year-old girl from Chikurubi drowned in a dam while swimming with her friends, police have said.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tedius Chibanda confirmed the incident, which occurred on Tuesday. “We received a report following the death of a 12-year-old girl from Support Unit Police Camp who drowned in Manresa Dam while swimming with her friends,” he said.

He said on the fateful day at around 3pm the girl was in the company of her friends who included boys.
Police reports indicate that the 12 children went to Manresa Dam for swimming.
As they were swimming the girl reportedly jumped into the deep end of the dam and drowned.

Her friends rushed back home to inform elders about the incident. However, when they returned to the scene in the company of some elders the girl had already died.

The body was retrieved from the dam and taken to a funeral parlour in the city but Insp Chibanda said it would be transferred to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals mortuary for post-mortem.
Inspector Chibanda urged parents to closely monitor their children when they are playing to avoid losing lives.
