ZIMBABWE Saints’ 1976 Chibuku Trophy winning goalkeeper Zebron Magorimbo, who died on Sunday evening, will be buried at West Park this morning.He was 59.
The goalkeeper, one of the best to emerge from the club’s junior ranks, succumbed to a long illness at his Mzilikazi home on Sunday.
Born in Bulawayo on March 20, 1955, Magorimbo grew up in Mzilikazi and turned out for the Zimbabwe Saints Under-14s and graduated into the first team in the mid 1970s.
He also played for Meikles and was involved in intense competition for the number one jersey with Musa Muzanenhamo in the club’s League and Cup double conquest on 1977.
A former Mzilikazi Primary and High School pupil, Magorimbo played alongside Andrew Kadengu, the late Max Tshuma and Isaac Banda, Philemon Dangarembga, Ben Makadzange as a junior before graduating to rub shoulders with legends Gibson Homela, Chita Antonio, Lucky Rufani and the late William Sibanda.
Dangarembga, a life-long friend of the former goalkeeper who guarded the goalposts in the 4-0 whacking of Highlanders in the 1976 Chibuku Trophy at Rufaro, said he had lost a pal.
“We grew up together mafana, it’s quite sad our generation is being wiped out. He was a good friend and teammate who loved Saints,” said Dangarembga.
Zimbabwe Saints board of trustees chairman Vincent Pamire said the team had lost a committed cadre.
“Even when he was ailing he still called to encourage us to push on. He wanted to see us revive Saints and in his honour and other dear departed former Saints players. We will leave no stone unturned in our quest to see the Saints go marching.”
