A 27-YEAR-OLD man from has been sentenced to 6 months behind bars after breaking into a home and stealing items worth US$50, which were later recovered from under his bed.
His child told villagers who were looking for the missing property that his father had hidden it under his bed, leading to his arrest.
The man was sentenced to six months imprisonment.
In a statement on X, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe said, “It was the State’s case that on the 15th of February 2022 at around 0700 hours the complainant discovered that his bedroom window was wide open though he had left it closed the previous day. The complainant went into the room to check and he discovered that some of his belongings which included a 20 litre bucket, knapsack, a pair of slippers, a shovel and a broom were missing.
“The complainant advised other villagers and the village head and they went to the scene to canvass the crime scene. On 3 May 2022 at around 0900 hours the village head, other villagers and the complainant heard from the accused person’s child that his father was hiding the stolen property under his bed. The accused person was confronted and he led the complainant to the recovery of the stolen property which was hidden under the bed. The total value of the stolen property is US$50.
The accused person was sentenced to 6 months imprisonment of which 3 months were suspended for 5 years. He will serve an effective 3 months.
