Child trafficker further remanded in custody

A 28-year-old Chitungwiza woman, who allegedly recruited seven minors from Karoi for purposes of prostitution, has been further remanded in custody.

Ivy Nyashanu, who appeared before Karoi magistrate Moreblessing Makati,  is facing two counts of kidnapping and contravening Section 8(2), as read with Section 8(4), of the Children’s Act Chapter.

She will be back in court on June 17 for routine remand.

Prosecuting, Progress Maponde, told the court that on May 13 2022, Nyashanu called a 14-year-old victim and informed her she was looking for young females willing to work in a boutique.

The minor, without suspecting anything sinister, briefed her friends aged 15, and two others aged 16, about the job offer by Nyashanu.

She is said to have continued pestering the girl asking her to come to her home, with her friends, as job vacancies were still open.

The four minors boarded a truck in Karoi and proceeded to Zengeza.

At around 10:30pm, the quartet arrived at a service station in Zengeza, Chitungwiza, where they were picked by Nyashanu, who took them to her house.

On May 14, around 7pm, Nyashanu took them to Chikwanha Business Centre, where they got into a nightclub.

She told them they were going to make money from men in the bar, by having sexual intercourse with them.

She had conversation with different men, who were inside the bar, and forced the juveniles to go with the men to a nearest lodge, where they were abused.

On May 15, in the morning, the juveniles went back to Nyashanu’s home and she told them that they were going to make money through prostitution.

On the same day, one of the juveniles called her friend, aged 15, and told her that Nyashanu was organising some jobs for them.

This prompted her to team up with another juvenile, aged 13, and two others, and boarded a truck and went to Chitungwiza where upon arrival, they were directed to Nyashanu’s home.

The parents of the victims looked for their children but to no avail.

They reported the missing children at ZRP Karoi Urban.

The court heard that Nyashanu went to organise men, who would abuse the juveniles on different occasions.

In return, the male adults were paying through her.

Nyashanu destroyed SIM cards of the juveniles fearing they could be traced.

On May 23, Nyashanu told the juveniles that she was going to take them to fishing camps in Kariba and later to Zambia.

This did not go down well with three juveniles, who realised that there was nothing Nyashanu was doing in organising jobs for them.

The trio decided to let their parents know of their whereabouts and to ask for bus fare to return home.

The court heard they asked for a cellphone from an unknown male adult.

One of the juveniles called her mother who then sent EcoCash money for their bus fare.

The trio boarded a minibus and returned to Karoi.

Police detectives investigated the case and proceeded to Chitungwiza, arrested Nyashanu and rescued the other three juveniles.

The victims were all accounted for and they alleged Nyashanu had recruited them for the purpose of prostitution.
