CHIMANIMANI Rural District Council chief executive officer Mr Nehemiah Deure has thanked Government and the nation at large for the timely intervention and efforts being made to save the lives of people affected by Cyclone Idai.
Mr Deure said there were many people who were still in danger and in need of assistance in various parts of Chimanimani District.
He bemoaned communication challenges which may cause delays in reaching out to some communities that may also be in urgent need of assistance.
President Mnangagwa, his deputy Constantino Chiwenga and other top Government officials yesterday visited the affected areas.
Government has since availed $50 million towards assisting Cyclone Idai victims and infrastructural restoration.
Said Mr Deure: “Ward 15 was the most affected part but I would like to thank those who came to the rescue, especially the Government.
“The biggest challenge we faced was accessibility as road networks were cut off when people were in dire need of help. Those who could render assistance failed to reach out to people to the extent that planes also failed due to bad weather.”
Mr Deure said efforts should be channelled towards saving human lives as many people were still in danger.
He said primary health care should also be a priority as the cyclone left many people homeless and the rains also come with water-borne diseases.
“At this point in time, we are saying all efforts should be channelled towards saving human lives. Lives should be saved at all cost. Primary health care should also be a priority as people are vulnerable to many diseases. Proper burials should also be rendered to those who lost their lives,” he said.
