FOUR male and two female teams from Chimanimani Ward Eight are tomorrow (Saturday) set to battle it out at Nyanyadzi Primary School to select players for Nyanyadzi Zanu-PF soccer and netball teams. Selected players will form the teams that will compete in various competitions in and out of the province starting this year.According to the organisers, the main idea is to expose youths in the community to bigger soccer and netball clubs around the nation.

Teams to take part include Sharp Arrows, Rufaro Rovers, Chindindindi, Makangani, Makochalo and Sharp Arrows ladies. The games are also open to any other teams around the district. The idea, which is a brainchild of Ward Eight youth chairperson, Muyaphi Chinguno, came after the realisation that there is a lot of untapped talent among youths in Chimanimani District.

These games have been a success through sponsorship from Zanu-PF national woman’s league secretary for administration Letina Undenge, Manicaland Zanu-PF provincial youth chairperson, Mubuso Chinguno, Mega Food Mart, Hurudza Wholesalers and Nyanyadzi Service Station, among others.

“Our games started last week and they were very successful. I would like to thank all our sponsors and well-wishers. The main purpose of these games is mostly talent identification and establishing a strong soccer and netball team in this ward.

Youths in this district can earn a living through sport, hence we found this exercise worthwhile.

We want our youths to play against teams in and out of this district so that they are exposed to bigger teams and clubs.

“It is now our duty as a committee to continue sourcing sponsorship and help in identifying talent in youths in this district. Besides that we also want to establish poultry and fish farming projects in this area for the youths. We have enough resources, but all we need now is capital,” said Chinguno.

In a separate interview, one of the youths who took part in the games, Lovemore Matsikenyere, said: “We rarely have such events in our area and it takes a few people to come up with ideas that benefit the whole community.

We are, however, looking forward to play at national level if all goes well. I believe we can see a change in our youths’ behaviour.” Winning teams will walk away with various monetary prizes.
