Simon Chimbetu’s widow, Angela, who has been hospitalised at Chitungwiza Central Hospital since Monday is suffering from pneumonia, her aunt said. In an interview at the hospital with The Herald yesterday, Ms Dananai Sakala said Angela who collapsed during her late husband’s commemorations held in the Harare Gardens last Sunday was complaining of breathing problems.
“She has been complaining of breathing problems but we were told that she was diagnosed with pneumonia.
“However, today she is feeling much better and her condition has improved in the last two two days. As you can see she even spoke on the phone and she had her breakfast and lunch,” she said.
Although she was obviously in pain, Angela managed to speak to her relatives including musician Kireni Zulu who led the other visitors in prayer.
“Judging from the way she is today, I think she is recovering well because on Monday she was in a bad state but I thank Go that our prayers were heard.
“I am happy that there has been a great improvement from the day she was admitted,” Zulu said.
Following her illness, Angela could not attend the Heroes Day event nor the commemorative gig held in Chinhoyi during the Heroes holiday.
Her late husband was the first musician to be conferred with provincial liberation war hero status.
Angela has been in and out of hospital in recent weeks as a result of high blood pressure a situation which some people have attributed to the hectic programme in the run-up to the Simon Chimbetu commemoration gigs.
