ZIMBABWEAN winger Cobert Junior Chimedza, is quickly making his mark in Portugal.

The 20-year-old was at the heart of AC Marinhense’s tense Taca de Portugal victory last weekend, holding his nerve to score the decisive penalty in a 3-0 shootout win over GD Samora Correia after the sides had battled to a 1-1 draw.

On loan from Primeira Liga outfit Gil Vicente, Chimedza has settled swiftly into life at the third tier club. His pace and flair have already earned him a key role in the team, and his composure under pressure is winning admiration.

“It’s always difficult to be in a different environment but I’m happy that I’m settling very well here and my teammates and coaches have welcomed me very well,” he said after the match.

Chimedza has featured in four competitive games since joining, starting with his debut in a 1-0 league win over Peniche. His contribution in the cup sealed Marinhense’s passage to the second round of Portugal’s most prestigious knockout tournament.

“I have played at least four competitive games so far and in our last cup game I’m happy that I helped my team to progress to the next stage,” he said. “So, I will keep working hard and contribute to the success of my team because at the end of the season my target will be to return to my parent club and cement my place in the team.”

Chimedza’s presence at Marinhense is the result of an unusual twist. Having signed for Gil Vicente earlier this year, Chimedza was sidelined by delays in processing his international clearance. By the time the paperwork came through, the club’s foreign player quota was already filled, making him ineligible to play for the first team or their U23 side.

That frustration has turned into opportunity. At Marinhense, he is playing consistently, gaining confidence, and proving his worth.

“This move is perfect for me. I need to play consistently to develop. The team has welcomed me, and I’m fully focused on contributing. Once I prove myself here, I will return stronger to fight for my place at Gil Vicente,” he said.

For now, Marinhense fans are grateful. They have a cool headed young winger capable of delivering in pressure moments, and Zimbabwe may have unearthed another footballer ready to grow into the European game.
