FORMER Highlanders, Railstars and Diamonds volleyball player, Nyaradzo Rutendo Makuyana arrived in Banjul, Gambia on Sunday where she is taking part in the week-long International Beach Volleyball Referees’ Candidate Course.
The International Beach Volleyball Referee Candidate Course will end on Monday and has attracted 25 participants from across the continent.
Initially the nation was expected to send two observers, Tavarera Mwauluka Tafadzwa and Thompson Ruvimbo Olivia but the pair pulled out due to finances.
Upon successful completion the Bulawayo born ex volleyball player, now based in Gweru, will cap a history of becoming the first female Beach Volleyball Certified Referee after being recommended by the Zimbabwe Volleyball Association (ZVA).
The recommendation letter signed off by Priestledge Nhamburo the ZVA secretary-general reads:
“RECOMMENDATION TO ATTEND THE INTERNATIONAL BEACH VOLLEYBALL REFEREE CANDIDATE COURSE BANJUL, GAMBIA (31 AUGUST 8 SEPTEMBER 2025)
“The above matter refers.
“The Zimbabwe Volleyball Association is pleased to inform you that you have been recommended to attend the International Beach Volleyball Referee Candidate Course to be held in Banjul, Gambia, from the 31st of August to the 8th of September 2025.
“This course is a prestigious program organized under the authority of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), designed to equip referees with advanced knowledge, practical exposure, and certification opportunities to officiate beach volleyball at regional, continental, and eventually international levels.
“By undertaking this training, you will benefit through acquiring internationally recognised qualification, gaining exposure to the latest officiating standards and practices and also enhance your professional profile and contributing to the growth of beach volleyball in Zimbabwe.
“Please note that the course is self-funding, and all costs related to travel, accommodation, course fees and any other expenses shall be borne by the participant.
“The Association strongly encourages you to take up this opportunity, as it will not only advance your personal career in refereeing but also strengthen Zimbabwe’s representation in international volleyball events.
“We wish you success in your preparations and trust you will make the most of this valuable opportunity.”
