CHINA fully supports Zimbabwe’s endeavours to play a greater role in regional and international affairs as the two countries remain key partners in safeguarding international fairness, justice and advancing global governance, Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Zhou Ding said.
Mr Zhou made the remarks during celebrations marking the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China in Harare on Wednesday.
He said China looks forward to deepening cooperation with Zimbabwe to practice true multilateralism and uphold the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter which among other things seeks to uphold the sovereign equality of all states.
“Both China and Zimbabwe believe that all countries, regardless of size, strength or wealth, are equal members of the international community. At a time when multilateralism and the international order are under serious challenge, China and Zimbabwe are key partners in safeguarding international fairness and justice and advancing global governance.
“China applauds and fully supports Zimbabwe’s endeavours to play a greater role in regional and international affairs. We look forward to deepening cooperation with Zimbabwe to practice true multilateralism and uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter,” said Mr Zhou.
Mr Zhou extended China’s congratulations to Zimbabwe for its expected assumption of the COMESA Chairmanship next month, as well as on its election as a non-permanent member of the
United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027–2028 term.
As part of its strategic positioning to re-engage and engage with other world players, Zimbabwe under the “Friend to All, Enemy of None” policy has built a reputation as a reliable partner that received the backing of 182 out of 193 states for the UNSC non-permanent seat.
He further commended Zimbabwe-China relations, which he said have spanned time and continents, as “never transactional” but “forged through shared struggles and common values.”
“This profound legacy of liberation continues to bind our two nations together,” Mr Zhou added.
In his remarks, Acting Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Dr Frederick Shava said Zimbabwe first foreign policy priority is promotion of a peaceful, fair, and secure international order as a prerequisite for global development.
He said Zimbabwe and China will stand shoulder-to-shoulder in defending defending multilateralism and the principles of the United Nations Charter.
“The first priority of Zimbabwe’s foreign policy is promoting a peaceful, fair, and secure international order as a prerequisite for global development. Zimbabwe stands shoulder-to-shoulder with China in defending multilateralism and the principles of the United Nations Charter,” said Dr Shava.
Zimbabwe, Dr Shava said, maintains a steadfast posture in the Global South and reaffirms its unyielding commitment to core issues concerning China’s sovereignty, including the One China Policy and the One Country, Two Systems principle.
Zimbabwe and China have maintained diplomatic relations for 46 years, and the two countries have on international fora worked together to defend principles of multilateralism, justice, the sovereign equality of states and a people’s right to self-determination.
The event was attended by Zanu PF Politburo members, senior Government officials, traditional chiefs and members of the diplomatic corps.
