Government has embarked on a joint infrastructure development programme with the Chinese to promote the construction of secondary and primary schools across the country.
Speaking at a ground-breaking ceremony for the China-Africa Friendship Construction project in Hatcliffe, Harare on Wednesday, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Dr Lazarus Dokora hailed the partnership in promoting teaching and learning.
The ceremony was attended by several Government officials, Chinese delegates and stakeholders.
“The country has a deficit of 2 056 schools as evidenced by the 2013 school mapping exercise and this ceremony indeed is a step towards addressing the shortfalls in the number of the much needed schools,” he said.
Minister Dokora said Government was facing challenges in providing sufficient learning institutions.
“Infrastructure is one of the five pillars of the new curriculum blue print,” he said. “We realise that the ministry cannot handle the mammoth of construction alone because of the current economic climate in our country.”
