Chinamo wins U-18 Hre Open tourney

Chinamo who is based in France was happy with his game but noted that the level of competition was a bit low.

“To be honest I think the tournament was quite weak, like not as strong as it should be.
“I have been in France since September, it’s been quite good. The level in France is much higher,” said Chinamo.

The girls title went to Karen Machisa who beat Tariro Dembo 5-7, 6-4, 7-5. Machisa had earlier on overpowered top seed Latifa Yasini 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the semi-finals.
Although the 14-year-old Machisa was impressed with her performance she said the victory had somewhat suprised her.
Machisa nonetheless reckoned the win would boost her confidence ahead of the Zimbabwe Closed, which starts at the same venue.

“The matches were tough but I played well and I wasn’t expecting to win the Under-18. I was surprised and I am happy because all the matches I played were tough.
“Last time I was in Bulawayo and won two tournaments in the Under-16 so I decided to take the Under-18. I think it’s going to help a lot because I have gained exposure and experience,” said Machisa.

Machisa also won the girls Under-16 doubles title when she partnered Nikita Daka and they beat the pair of Munashe Kaome and Beverly Matsiwe 6-3, 6-4.
Alosha Chikanda defeated Shingirai Kamucheka 6-3, 7-5 to claim the boys Under-16 title while Munashe Kaome beat Beverly Matsiwe 6-0, 5-7, 6-0 in the girls section.

Tatenda Mutetwa and Munyawiri outclassed the pair of Mzwandile Lupahla and Anesu Kwirirai 6-2, 6-1.
Tournament director, Martin Dzuwa said there has been an improvement in terms of quality of matches.

“The level of competition was fairly much better. We had some upsets during the tournament whereby you find the top seed losing in the first round, which is good for the players and increases the competition,” said Dzuwa.

Meanwhile most of the players are expected to be back on court today when they fight for honours in the Zimbabwe Closed, which runs until Thursday.
