A CHINESE national has been ordered to return to his country of origin after he was arrested for exceeding his stay in the country by 278 days.
Mr XU Jianguo (52) came to Zimbabwe on June 10, 2024, on a single-entry business visa and on July 22, 2024, he acquired a Temporary Employment permit, which expired on July 22 2025, but he remained in the country for an additional 278 days, leading to his arrest.
Chitungwiza Magistrate, Batsirai Madzingira, sentenced him to four months’ imprisonment, which were wholly suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour and he ordered the accused to be deported to China.
The State’s case, led by public prosecutor Ms Shamiso Charmaine Mwapangira, revealed that on the period extending from July 2025 to 27 April 2026, Mr XU Jianguo unlawfully remained in Zimbabwe for a period of 278 days without a valid permit, thereby contravening Section 29(1)(a) as read with Section 29(2)(a) of the immigration Act, Chapter 4:02 – “Enter, Be or Remain in Zimbabwe without a valid permit’.
Mr XU Jianguo of the Republic of China is a holder of a valid Chinese Passport number: EM1866339 and was staying at Kuora Village, Chitungwiza, Seke, where he indicated that he was married to a Zimbabwean national, Rosina Sachiwo, during the time of his arrest by a team of detectives after a tip off.
On April 27 this year, at around 1230 pm, detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department, Chitungwiza received information to the effect that there was a Chinese National who was residing in Kuora Village, Seke without proper documentation.
Acting upon the information, the detectives teamed up and proceeded to the said village, and they located him, and he indicated to them that he was married to a Zimbabwean lady, Sachiwo.
After going through his passport, they learnt that he entered the country on June 10, 2024
through Robert Gabriel International Airport on a single-entry business visa.
The State stated that on July 22, 2024, Mr XU Jianguo was issued a Temporary Employment
permit, which expired on July 22, 2025, but he chose to remain in Zimbabwe.
On April 28 this year, the accused was handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department
Counter Terrorism Unit for further management.
His passport was produced in court as evidence of his 278-day overstay.
