Government has come to the rescue of over 4 000 families at Chingwizi in Mwenezi East after distributing 210 tonnes of maize.
Some of the families received foodstuffs and other goods mobilised by various organisations and individuals following a storm that hit Mwenezi East and parts of Chingwizi, leaving more than 70 families homeless.
The families at Chingwizi were relocated from Tugwi-Mukosi basin in Chivi following flooding in 2014.
Speaking during the handover on Tuesday, Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs Ezra Chadzamira said the Government would continue to assist the villagers with food.
He said resource constraints continued to hamper Government efforts to transform the flood victims’ lives, adding that President Mnangagwa’s Government was working flat out to make sure they were fully compensated.
“Government is aware of the challenges bedevilling families relocated here,” said Minister Chadzamira.
“To that effect, the President Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa has pledged to fully compensate all the villagers affected by Tugwi-Mukosi floods.
“We have also noted challenges being faced by villagers here which include poor residential infrastructure as a result of uncertainty of tenure on the current plots, inadequate arable land, inadequate water and poor sanitation, among others.”
Minister Chadzamira assured the flood victims that they would be the first beneficiaries of an out-grower scheme for crops such as sugarcane and other cash crops to be irrigated with water from Tugwi-Mukosi.
The Infrastructural Development Bank of Zimbabwe is spearheading development of irrigation using Tugwi-Mukosi water.
In her address at the same occasion, Mwenezi District Administrator Mrs Rosemary Chingwe applauded Government and the corporate world for remembering the people of Chingwizi.
The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society donated tents and groceries at the event, while the National Aids Council donated sanitary pads.
