THE Chinese embassy in Zimbabwe last week donated 15 000 surgical masks to Chinhoyi High School, which is one of the institutions worst affected by Covid-19.
Over 70 pupils tested positive for Covid-19 at the school just before learners closed on December 18, prompting health officials to suspend learning activities while examinations continued under strict monitoring.
As a result of the outbreak, classes for day-learners were suspended indefinitely, while positive students were quarantined in dormitories.
Chinese Embassy’s economic and commercial counsellor, Mr Xiaoming Zou, said the personal protective equipment could help curb the spread of the virus.
“Recently, there has been a rapid increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in Zimbabwe’s communities and we learned that there were dozens of confirmed cases at Chinhoyi High School.
We decided to donate 15 000 surgical masks to help mitigate the spread of the virus.
“We are confident that the Zimbabwean people will overcome the pandemic. In future, we will continue to pay attention to Chinhoyi High School and do our best in providing help to fight Covid-19,” he said.
Mashonaland West acting medical director, Dr Gift Masoja, advised schools to scrupulously follow health protocols when schools reopen.
Schools will reopen on January 4 to all classes except Form One and Lower Sixth learners, who will return early February .
