Chinhoyi needs more secondary schools

Chinhoyi residents have called on council to build more secondary schools, as existing ones are failing to absorb numbers coming out of primary schools. The call came during budget consultation meetings held in all the 15 wards of the town. Residents hailed council for building more primary schools, but said their children were being forced to walk long distances for their secondary education. The most affected children are in newly established residential areas such as Ruvimbo, Rujeko, Rusununguko and St Ives.

“We are grateful that council has been able to build primary schools to service the areas, but our children do not have secondary schools,” said Mr Admire Chitsungo.

Chairperson of the budget committee Mr Godfrey Mavankeni invited churches and other organisations to come forward and get land to build schools in the area.

“Chinhoyi Municipality has done very well by building two schools in Ruvimbo and Rujeko. Residents are saying prioritise secondary schools because we have a limited number in our town. Council is saying to churches, organisations that are able to build secondary schools to come forward,” he said.

The director of housing services Mr Timothy Maregere said land was available for building secondary schools, especially in Brundish. Meanwhile, council has urged those who have built houses in the new residential areas to clear their arrears to have them fully serviced.
