CHINHOYI STARS handed Harare City their first defeat in the ZIFA Northern Region Division One League campaign here yesterday.
It was a David versus Goliath affair and the Stars, who are swimming in the murky waters of relegation, won 2-1 at Chinhoyi Stadium.
Harare City broke the deadlock in the 60th minute through a strike by Matthew Murambiwa.
However, the hosts came back strongly and equalised in the 76th minute through a strike by Leroy Karuru.
Newton Tembo snatched the winner with a well-taken penalty in the 88th minute to seal the comeback victory.
Harare City coach, Ikabort Masocha, felt the defending by his team was not good.
“It happens in a game of football. We just have to pick ourselves and start again. We need to win the next game,” said Masocha.
“We need to work on our mistakes, which led the hosts to come back into the game,” he said.
Chinhoyi Stars coach, Pearson Matare, a former Dynamos star, was a happy man.
“Our players played to instruction. I am really very happy with today’s result. Today I am not in the mood to talk, but bask in the glory of our win,” said Matare.
Chinhoyi Stars chairman, Tapiwa Chitate, said the win was a morale-booster.
“We managed to beat Harare City, which is on top of the log. Last year we also pulled a Houdini act by beating the then log leaders Black Mambas here at our fortress.
“This has boosted our confidence as we fight relegation. We won’t go down without a fight. Chinhoyi Stars has got that fighting spirit. I call upon the corporate world to plough back into the community through giving back to Stars,” said Chitate.
