After a successful tour of Germany, Chipawo arrived here over the weekend for a 10-day cultural exchange programme scheduled for Svendborg City. The cultural exchange programme is meant to introduce Chipawo to new ideas and an environment they are not used to. The team will join Danish Theatre Training lessons for children and young people.
Chipawo manager Chipo Basopo said they have worked together with DATS since 1994. She said there were a lot of activities lined up during the 10-day period which will benefit both parties.
“Cultural exchange programmes are important because we get to learn new ideas. If you look closely many barriers have begun to fall between people around the world, with technology allowing people from different countries to interact and exchange ideas.
“I am excited about the activities lined up as they encourage people to appreciate and understand other cultures. That is a key area in creating productive dialogue across the world,” she said.
Basopo said they would tell a Zimbabwean story in a musical and promised to draw lessons from Denmark. She said the programmes would produce a joint performance with Danish children.
“Our play was greatly appreciated at the just ended festival in Germany and our aim is to see the cultural and creative exchange between the theatre groups and their leaders plus giving the audience a glimpse of the Zimbabwe culture,” she said.
Basopo said Chipawo will perform in the streets of Svendborg on Old Market Day on Thursday and at Gjerrits Plads the following day. Chipawo will also open up the programme with their play “Mavara, My Identity, My Culture, My Strength”. The exchange programme is being sponsored by Svendborg Kammune, Centre for Kultur Og and DATS among others.
