In an exciting cultural exchange initiative, 24-year-old Chipendani player Anesu Ndoro will participate in a recital that blends Zimbabwean traditional instruments with the Chinese Guzheng and classical Western piano.

The event is scheduled to take place at the Reps Theatre in Belgravia, Harare, starting at 2:30pmM and concluding at 6:30pm.

Titled “Experience Afro-Sino Dreams: A Cross-Cultural Musical Recital for Heritage, Innovation, and Collaboration,” this event promises a musical encounter that transcends borders and genres.

Anesu will share the stage with Chinese musician Belle Qiu and pianist Sabelo Nyoni, all united in their mission to promote cross-cultural collaboration, fostering mutual understanding, innovation, and respect among diverse cultures.

While the spotlight will shine on Anesu, who aims to evoke the rich history of the Chipendani, it is important to note the broader cultural significance of this recital.

“Anesu Ndoro revives and reimagines Zimbabwe’s musical heritage with instruments like the Chipendani, Xitende, Chivandudzo, Uhadi, and Umakhweyana, as well as the Autoharp.

“Many of these indigenous instruments are at risk of extinction due to globalization and the erosion of traditional practices.

“Anesu’s performances breathe new life into archival African music, blending tradition with creative innovation, and making a powerful case for the protection and promotion of Zimbabwe’s intangible cultural heritage.”

Event organisers emphasised that today’s recital is a must-attend occasion, further solidifying the already strong ties between Zimbabwe and China.

“Anesu Ndoro, Belle Qiu, and Sabelo Nyoni—three musical explorers from different worlds—are united by a passion for creating something truly original.

Their journey began as a playful idea between Sabelo, a seasoned pianist and choral director, and Belle, a master of the Guqin from China.

“When Sabelo sought to incorporate African stringed instruments, fate led her to Anesu, a Zimbabwean instrument builder and multi-instrumentalist. Together, they have crafted a soundscape that intertwines East, West, and the Motherland.”

The organisers noted that this recital is particularly special as it showcases the power of collaboration. “This event is more than just a musical performance; it represents a vital act of cultural preservation.

“Showcasing rare instruments like the Chipendani and Uhadi on a public stage provides a unique opportunity not only to share their beauty but also to promote their protection and resurgence for future generations.”

The Afro-Sino Dreams recital directly supports these goals, aligning with Zimbabwe’s National Creative Industries Strategy and National Music Strategy, both of which advocate for the safeguarding and revitalization of local arts and knowledge systems.

At this event, Qiu will present the Guqin, a seven-stringed zither with a 7,000-year-old legacy, revered in Chinese culture for its spiritual and scholarly significance.

She will perform pieces dating as far back as 2200 B.C., 100 A.D., and 750 A.D., offering a rare glimpse into the ancient musical traditions of China.

As for Nyoni, the director of Note2etoN, a choir and musical initiative dedicated to fostering excellence, innovation, and community through cross-cultural collaboration, she will showcase her versatility.

This recital has been hailed as a clarion call that will significantly contribute to the resurgence and sustainability of Zimbabwe’s indigenous musical heritage. It has been established that the inclusion and promotion of indigenous instruments in public life and education are essential for their survival and for the continued vibrancy of Zimbabwean culture.

Afro-Sino Dreams is a step forward—an invitation for communities, policymakers, and the public to join hands in safeguarding and celebrating our shared heritage
