TWO Chipinge men have been sentenced to an effective 29 years in prison.

Witness Makonyedzeni (26) and Blessing Nyabowa (26) were convicted on three counts of robbery.

The matter was presided over by Magistrate Bishard Chineka, while Isaac Tangwena prosecuted on behalf of the State.

Tangwena described how the pair, armed with a toy pistol, machete, claw hammer and pepper spray, stormed premises and instilled fear among shop attendants and customers.

“The two acted in common purpose when they entered the shop armed with dangerous weapons, including a machete and a claw hammer, and a toy pistol which created the impression of a real firearm.

“They threatened violence and demanded cash and valuables from everyone present, thereby placing the victims in fear for their lives,” said Mr Tangwena.

The court heard that the duo first targeted the shop owner, whom they attacked before spraying her with pepper spray to subdue her.

They then stole her cellphone, US$60, R200, a radio set and airtime worth US$4.
