LAST week Friday marked the beginning of a partial return to competitions for schools in Chipinge West after a hiatus of more than one-and-a-half years which was occasioned by the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Learning institutions in the area took on each other in the semi-finals of four disciplines – quiz, public speaking, chess and poetry recital – as they vied for a slot in the finals.
The finals are scheduled for Tanganda Primary School tomorrow.
Five zones will battle it out for the right to represent the district at the provincial finals slated for next week.
The National Association of Primary Heads (NAPH) contact head in Chipinge West, Mr Tangirai Simango, expressed delight at the level of the competition.
He said: “The level of the competition was great and learners and teachers really applied themselves well. Our theme was on how Covid-19 has impacted the education system. The poetry and public speaking side of the competition captured that aspect very well.”
What captured the imagination of neutral observers was the powerful recital of a Covid-19 related poem by Esnath Mhlanga of Maronga Primary School.
She brought the roof down with a captivating performance.
The confidence she exuded was just out of this world.
Interestingly, her sibling, Tariro also came out tops in the public speaking category.
