Tawanda Mangoma in Chiredzi
Chiredzi Town Council is planning to avail 1 000 medium density housing stands to reduce its housing backlog.
This comes as council recently received $300 000 from Government under the Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP) for upgrading of the town’s water pumping and conveyancing infrastructure.
Council chair councillor Gibson Hwende yesterday warned that council will only allow construction of houses once the site has been serviced.
Cllr Hwende said his council had learnt major lessons from past mistakes.
“As Chiredzi Town Council, we are worried by the state of affairs at Makondo Extension where residents constructed houses before council developed roads, sewer and installed piped water,” he said.
“We have about 1 000 medium density stands that will be availed by council soon, but this time we want to make it very clear that beneficiaries will not be allowed to start any construction work before the stands are fully-serviced.’’
Cllr Hwende applauded Government for availing funding for upgrading the water works system.
“We have already started looking at pressing issues, which are affecting the smooth flow of business in our council and we are happy that Government has already disbursed $300 000 (under PSIP) for the upgrading of the water reticulation system,” he said.
“Residents in wards 5 and 8 have been complaining about erratic water supplies, but very soon it will be a thing of the past because we are going to upgrade the water pumping, conveyancing and storage infrastructure.”
