Chiredzi Town Council’s town secretary Welsey Kauma is facing charges of defrauding the council of 1305 square meters of land.
The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has since arrested Kauma for allegedly swindling the local authority.
Prosecutors allege that Kauma reduced the size of a commercial stand allocated to him in 2013 and ended up paying less.
This resulted in a US$10 620 loss for the council.
Years later, in 2023, the Chiredzi Small and Medium Enterprises Chamber (SMEC) received approval for a commercial stand, including the one Kauma had been granted.
The council planned to exchange Kauma’s stand for another.
Despite the council’s decision, Kauma allegedly approached the SMEC and demanded payment.
The Chamber reportedly agreed to purchase the stand from Kauma for US$75 500.
Kauma is accused of misrepresenting ownership of the stand and selling council property without authorization.
The altered lay-out plan approved by the council for SMEC’s use was reportedly ignored by Kauma during the sale.
Kauma is currently out on bail and awaits trial on July 3, 2024.
Council allegedly lost 1305 square metres of land due to Kauma’s actions.
