FORMER Zimbabwe rugby international player and Under-20 assistant coach Marvin Chirume has landed a big coaching position after being named as the new head coach of the Ghana national team.
Chirume, a decorated development coach, takes over at the Ghanaian Eagles from fellow Zimbabwean Lovemore “Dallas” Kuzorera.
His appointment was made official on Monday after successfully navigating through the selection process by the Ghana Rugby Board.
In his last coaching role before moving to Ghana, Chirume was part of the coaching staff of the Zimbabwe Under-20 rugby team which won back-to-back Rugby Africa U-20 Barthes Cup titles in 2022 and 2023.
He was assistant to Shaun De Souza.
Apart from the national junior side, Chirume also coaches giants Old Hararians alongside Gateway High School where he was the sports director.
Chirume was part of the Sables squad in 2003 and 2004 as a product of schoolboy rugby powerhouse, Prince Edward.
He played for the Tiger’s first team in 1996 before moving on to Old Hararians.
Meanwhile, the Bulawayo Metropolitan Rugby Football Board (BMRFB) Sevens league got off to a flying start this past weekend.
A total of 17 matches, across both the men’s and women’s categories, were played at Hartsfield Rugby Grounds on Saturday.
There were three ladies’ matches with Matabeleland Warriors beating Highlanders and Panthers 20-0 and 17-5 respectively.
Panthers went on to register a 20-0 win over Highlanders.
The Sevens league comes after the completion of the 2024 Zambezi Sevens Series that took place in Harare at the end of last month.
Two teams from Bulawayo, Matabeleland Warriors and Panthers competed at the annual tournament which featured teams from Zambia and Botswana among other local sides.
The local sevens league is set to run for three weeks and there are other tournaments lined up after the completion of the league such as the Unforgettable Sevens Series.
The Unforgettable Sevens Series is pencilled in for November with the dates yet to be confirmed.
