From John Murwira in Chirundu
Chirundu Town Board has embarked on a massive road rehabilitation programme to ensure its roads are trafficable and pothole-free by year end.
The town board has been allocated about $530 000 by Government through the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Fund being administered by the Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (Zinara). Chirundu Town Board secretary Mr Wilson Gunhe said roadworks had already started, with four kilometres having been attended to so far.
“We have started our roadworks with 2km of road being constructed, while an extra 2km have been resealed. We have also embarked on storm drain construction and as of now we have constructed 2km,” he said.
Mr Gunhe said the board was allocated $529 335,27 by Zinara for 2018, but is yet to receive the disbursement. Last year, Mr Gunhe said, Chirundu was allocated $239 289 and used $152 815.
“The remaining amount for last year could not be used because the contractor, who was supposed to do the road works had not mobilised resources. The disbursements came late, prompting the contractor to fail to complete the job as he could not mobilise enough resources. We hope this year Zinara will avail funds on time so that we will be able to carry out planned work,” he said.
Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Dr Joram Gumbo recently took a swipe at the council, urging the officials to effectively utilise funds, while working closely with legislators.
