CHISIPITE Shopping Centre in Harare is now an eyesore.
And, the Harare City Council is planning to address the issue of illegal vending in response to complaints from residents.
The Council says it has identified alternative locations for the vendors and intends to provide them with dedicated sites.
Ward 8 Councillor, Keith Charumbira, said the vendors had caused littering problems, exacerbated by poor waste disposal facilities.
He stated that the Council had deployed enforcers to police the area and encouraged all vendors in Ward 8 to register at the district offices for them to be designated selling sites with the necessary infrastructure.
Chisipite Shopping Centre has lost its lustre over the years due to the invasion by vendors from as far afield as Domboshava.
“We are aware of the situation at Chisipite Shopping Centre where the number of illegal vendors has increased.
“There are now vendors from Domboshava selling their wares at the shopping centre, and this is causing a littering problem as there aren’t adequate bins,” he said.
He said the Council had been trying to collect garbage at the shopping centre frequently, but some residents were now just dumping litter at the place.
“We are identifying a number of places where we can put ablution facilities so that vendors can sell from points with water, bins and toilets.”
