CHITUNGWIZA Town Council, which doesn’t have even one traffic light, is poorer than Epworth, a senior official has said.
Permanent Secretary in the Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ministry, Tafadzwa Muguti, said this when he congratulated the newly-elected councillors of Chitungwiza Town Council.
He emphasised the need to improve service delivery in the dormitory town,.
He said the council’s mandate was clear, as stipulated in the Constitution of Zimbabwe and the Urban Councils Act Chapter (29:15).
Muguti criticised the municipality for failing to install a single traffic light in the town and urged them to channel resources towards efficient service delivery.
“Local authorities in Zimbabwe play an important role in promoting sound local governance and undertaking and coordinating urban development to enhance the socio-economic development of Zimbabwe.
“Chitungwiza Town Council is one of the largest local authorities, but you are the poorest, even Epworth has more money than you. It is time to build a better Chitungwiza,” said Muguti.
Lovemore Maiko was elected the new mayor of Chitungwiza.
Jerita Mutigwende will be the deputy.
Maiko takes over from Kuven Mutimbanyoka.
