Chitungwiza chamber secretary suspended

Chitungwiza Municipality Chamber Secretary Mrs Priscilla Vengesai was suspended last Thursday following accusations that she mobilised councillors to pass a vote of no confidence on her superiors.

Mrs Vengesai is accused of wanting to topple the mayor Councillor Philip Mutoti and his deputy.

This follows her recent move when she called for a special meeting in which she said was meant to address important issues affecting the council.

The meeting was blocked by Clr Mutoti and she was eventually suspended. Mrs Vengesai is expected to go for a hearing on Thursday next week.

A source from the council said Mrs Vengesai was suspended after she was involved in a scuffle with Clr Mutoti and town clerk Mr George Makunde.

“The first issue the chamber secretary was suspended for was being accused of wanting to topple the mayor and his deputy,” said the source.

“She is said to have wanted to replace the two with Clrs Lameck Chivhongodze and Beulah Jena as mayor and deputy respectively.”

The source added, “The second issue is that of calling for a special council meeting without the knowledge of the mayor and town clerk, the move which was described as unconstitutional.”

Mr Makunde confirmed Mrs Vengesai’s suspension, but could not shed more light.

Mrs Vengesai confirmed her suspension.
