The Municipality of Chitungwiza has ordered the removal of pool tables operating at unauthorised locations amid growing concerns that some have become hotspots for drug dealing and substance abuse, particularly among youths.
In a public notice, acting town clerk Mr Japson Nemuseso said the local authority was alarmed by the increasing number of pool tables being operated in residential areas, overnight parking sites, tuckshops, shebeens, road servitudes and public transport termini.
The municipality said reports indicate that some of the facilities are being used as centres for illicit drug activities, posing a threat to public safety and community well-being.
“Such activities pose a threat to public safety, community well-being and the future of our youth,” said Mr Nemuseso.
To address the problem, the municipality has directed all operators of pool tables located at unauthorised sites to remove them within seven working days, together with any related illegal structures.
“Failure to comply with this directive will result in the municipality confiscating the pool tables and taking any other enforcement measures permitted by the law,” reads part of the notice.
The municipality said it would work closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure compliance with the directive.
District offices have also been instructed to immediately stop issuing permits for pool tables, pending a review of existing ones.
As part of wider efforts to combat drug and substance abuse, Chitungwiza Municipality said it is moving ahead with plans to establish rehabilitation facilities for affected individuals.
A daycare rehabilitation centre is planned for Utano in Zengeza 4, while a 24-hour rehabilitation centre is set to be established at Tatenda Tavern.
According to the municipality, the facilities will provide treatment, counselling, rehabilitation and reintegration services, with a particular focus on young people affected by substance abuse.
Residents have been urged to support the initiative by reporting illegal drug-related activities and participating in community programmes aimed at protecting and empowering youths.
The directive follows a resolution adopted during the municipality’s 508th Ordinary Council Meeting held on Monday.
