THE 27th Chitungwiza Junior Council has resolved to launch a Digital Awareness Campaign to educate learners on responsible and safe internet use.
The initiative was among key issues discussed during the Junior Council meeting held on Saturday.
Chitungwiza Municipality spokesperson Mr Tafadzwa Kachiko said the campaign follows Government’s approval of the Zimbabwe National Child Online Protection Policy (2026–2030) in June this year.
“The policy seeks to safeguard children from online threats by addressing key areas such as cyberbullying, legal protection, digital literacy and public awareness,” he said.
“The Junior Council intends to roll out the Digital Awareness campaign in schools across Chitungwiza and is developing a structured implementation framework to guide the programme.”
Junior mayor Emmanuel Mashiri said the digital awareness initiative would be followed by a Mental Health Awareness Campaign.
“We have realised that many challenges affecting young people begin in the digital space, including cyberbullying,” he said.
“We want to educate our peers on responsible internet use first, and after that we will move on to mental health awareness.”
Junior Council Disciplinary spokesperson Clefflo Chirumezani said the campaign would also promote the positive use of technology while encouraging parental involvement.
“We want to demonstrate that social media can be used responsibly. Many children are not aware that the internet can be a valuable tool for learning and research,” he said.
“We also want to educate parents on how to ensure their children’s screen time is safe and balanced.
“Many parents have raised concerns that excessive social media use is affecting children’s participation in household chores.”
