CHITUNGWIZA mayor Rosaria Mangoma says her legacy goal is solving the long-standing sewage problems in Chitungwiza.
She said her council has adopted her legacy goal under the African Mayoral Leadership Initiative (AMALI) data programme.
AMALI supports African mayors by providing expert guidance, technical assistance and tools to help them use data effectively in addressing service delivery challenges.
Speaking at the 497th Ordinary meeting of the Municipality of Chitungwiza held on Thursday, Councillor Mangoma said since the council adopted the goal, two online meetings have been held with the AMALI team.
“One of them we held earlier today (Thursday). A key point to note is that this programme will not provide funding for sewer works, but will help us gather the data we need to set funding and manage our projects more effectively,” she said.
“I sincerely appreciate AMALI’s efforts in supporting us to improve how we use data. This will help strengthen our ongoing sewer rehabilitation projects, which, unfortunately, have been moving slowly.
“Delays are frustrating for our residents who sometimes experience worse conditions while waiting for solutions.”
Clr Mangoma said the council had major projects underway including the Seke sewer outfall and recently started the Zengesa outfall.
“If completed successfully, these projects will significantly reduce sewer bursts in our own town, Chitungwiza,” she said.
“I also want to acknowledge the progress made in the past month. New pipes have been laid along a sewer line crossing Chaminuka Drive in St Mary’s.
“In the area known as PaChiweshe, additionally, our works department has started road rehabilitation at the Chinembiri intersection near Makoni and I commend their efforts.
“However, I remain concerned about the pace of implementation, which is very slow. Many of our projects take too long to complete. We must push for timely delivery.”
Clr Mangoma said the AMALI team will visit the council next month to tour the sewer project.
