A bid by Chitungwiza municipality to retrench some of its workers suffered a blow after workers’ representatives opposed the exercise as well as the package which was being offered by their employer.In a circular dated November 11 town clerk Mr George Makunde said the council would now refer the matter to the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare for determination in line with the provisions of the Labour Act.
“This circular serves to give an update on the retrenchment process. The process started on 30 September 2013, when the Municipality of Chitungwiza through its accounting officer, the town clerk, notified the Chitungwiza Municipality Works Council of its intention to reduce the number of employees to a sustainable level through voluntary retrenchment in line with Section 12C of the Labour Act. Due to lack of adequate financial resources the employer is adopting the criteria of last in first out. As such, subject to approval by the Retrenchment Board, the municipality is intending to retrench soonest,” read part of the circular.
“In view of the above, the Chitungwiza Municipality will advise employees of the outcome once the ministry of Labour through its retrenchment board advises of its determination,” said Mr Makunde.
