CHITUNGWIZA Municipality today swears in new councillors at its first full council meeting set for the head office.
The town has 25 councillors — 21 from MDC-Alliance and four from zanu-pf.
Chitungwiza Municipality public relations officer Mr Lovemore Meya confirmed the development yesterday.
“Yes, tomorrow (today) we will have the swearing-in ceremony of our 25 elected councillors at the chambers,” he said.
Mr Meya said they were looking forward to working well with the new crop of councillors.
“We welcome the new councillors because this will enhance service delivery,” he said.
“We are looking forward to working with them as a team and hope this will take service delivery in the town to greater levels as their expertise is greatly appreciated.”
A new mayor for Chitungwiza will be elected next week.
Three councillors are eyeing the post — Goodwill Mushangwe (Ward 9), Jabulani Mtunzi (Ward 15) and Gift Tsverere (Ward 22).
Mr Mtunzi is a provincial youth chairperson for the MDC-Alliance.
Mr Tsverere holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration, while Mushangwe is the outgoing deputy mayor.
Residents expect the new councillors to deliver service for a town long run down by successive MDC-led councils.
Chitungwiza and Manyame Rural Residents’ Association director Mr Marvellous Khumalo said they expected equal access to service delivery, economic opportunities and non-politicisation of social services.
“It is our hope that the new councillors will ensure the delivery of basic services such as clean and potable water, health care and refuse collection,” he said.
“We also expect equal access to economic opportunities such as land, vending spaces and affordable housing, among other things.”
