The council is supplied with water by Harare for only two days a week, but it has failed to pump it to areas like Seke. Failure to pay for water supplied by Harare has also led to supply problems, as Harare throttles supplies to force payment. Residents of the satellite town of nearly two million people were on Wednesday seen scrounging for water in dug out wells, streams and at the limited boreholes.
Women and children formed the majority of the people in the queues.
Mr Stanley Nyakuwanikwa of Unit O complained that he has not accessed municipal water for over a year.
“Our taps are dry. We have to rely on boreholes. We are not even sure if this borehole water meets the required standards. The only solution is for this council to be removed so that we have a fresh council with people at heart. The councillors’ priorities are not in line with our welfare,” he said.
Mr Nyakuwanikwa said each time there is electricity load shedding, the residents do not access water as pumping stops.
Ms Chipo Samson said families have to use buckets to flush their toilets. Ms Tafadzwa Munukwa, a high school pupil said during school days she has to queue for water first before going to school.
