Chitungwiza is set to install its first traffic lights to ease congestion, an official has said.

The municipality’s works manager Engineer Emmanuel Mushata told The Herald that they planned to install three lights at a cost of $135 000.

He said the traffic lights were expected to be installed at the intersections of Tilcor and Chitungwiza roads, Mharapara and C Junction and at CA in St Mary’s.

He added that implementation of the project was expected to start at the end of July.

“Having traffic lights in Chitungwiza is something that was long overdue considering that we have a growing vehicle population. We are working with a budget of $135 000,” he said.

“The project had always been on the cards, but funding was a challenge and we then decided to utilise funds from Zinara and our own resources.

“These lights will help reduce congestion at the busiest intersections in Chitungwiza and enhance safety for pedestrians and motorists,” said Eng Mushata.

Eng Mushata said they were working on some technical specifications after which they will float the tender.
