BRIGHTON Chivandire is the new Sables team manager. Chivandire’s appointment comes ahead of the 2015 World Cup whose qualifiers will get underway in July in Madagascar. The Zimbabwe Rugby Union, in a statement, said the appointment came after their Appointments Committee conducted an extensive selection process having received a number of applications for the role.
“Final interviews were completed last week, the Appointments Committee made recommendations to the ZRU executive committee based on their deliberations, procedures and processes.
“Chivandire has 22 years of experience within the Zimbabwe Rugby fraternity as he has represented the country as a player for the Sables, fulfilled various roles in the ZRU, including a long and successful tenure as head coach of the national Under-20 side.
“His extensive experience and wide knowledge of the game, players and stakeholders in the sport will contribute positively to the team environment,” the ZRU said.
Chivandire was shortlisted along with several other applicants after former manager Losson Mtongwizo quit all forms of rugby early this year.
Meanwhile, the Dairibord Zimbabwe Schools Rugby Festival will be graced by South African Rugby Union president Oregan Hoskins and Ian McIntosh the national selector of the Springboks.
The festival will begin next week and the ZRU will host their South African guests hoping to strengthen relations between the two rugby unions.
The local festival is regarded as the biggest schools rugby festival in the world, in terms of the numbers of players who take part.
The tournament will offer the ZRU, through the Festival Organising Committee, an opportunity to implement a number of initiatives to drive the sport forward.
ZRU said both Hoskins and McIntosh have agreed to speak at a fund-raising dinner for the Sables.
“At the Dairibord Festival the ZRU will be working with the tournament’s organising committee to implement a coach education programme that will be kindly supported by McIntosh.
“The programme will aim to improve coaches’ skills at all levels. McIntosh will also run a coaching programme with the Zimbabwe Under-20 players and the senior national side, the Sables,” said the ZRU.
During the festival a National Rugby Disciplinary workshop will be conducted by Mudiwa Mundawarara and Bongai Zamchiya
There will be a full anti-doping education programme throughout the week.
