Choice galore for theatre lovers

As the big arts event in the counts starts today, theatre lovers are in for a treat with a number of plays lined up for them from today to the last day of the festival. The plays include Shakespear’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” that is on today at the Standard theatre. The play which is a combination of love, magic and comedy has been supercharged with the rich sounds and sights of Zimbabwe to suit in the country’s environment.

There is also going to be another Shakespearen popular play Macbeth that will be performed by a four strong all male troupe of cycling players. The handle-bards will be performing the play differently using bikes. Another interesting play on the line up is “The Greyman Experiment” which will feature Zimbabwean Precious Mudzingwa and South African Bongani Xulu.

The play is interesting in the sense that it looks at how the environment is changing with mixing black and white becoming the norm as a result, a grey colour.

For the first time, Assitej centres and the Swedish Institute through the From Idea To Action initiative have come together to create a mini festival of short plays from five countries including Zimbabwe, Sweden, Zambia, Mozambique and South Africa. The plays tackles issues that affect children. Defending the Caveman, Pss Pss, Hela, Ericthefred, Mpinga Mornings are some of the plays to expect on this year’s edition of the festival.
