Harare City Council has issued a warning to residents to take all measures to prevent the return of cholera after a new case was recorded.

Investigations into the cause are ongoing, but the council is implementing measures to contain the outbreak.

Residents are being urged to take preventive measures, including drinking treated water and washing their hands regularly. The council is also urging residents, with any signs of diarrhoea, to report to the nearest clinic.

Harare City Council epidemiologist, Michael Vere, said they had recorded one new confirmed cholera case in Hopley Zone 5.

“We recorded a new cholera case in Hopely Zone 5 and we are currently investigating the causes of the cholera.

“Council is implementing measures to contain the outbreak in Hopely and we are also working on investigating in other areas that are usually attacked by cholera.

“We are investigating local sources of this infection,” he said.

He said while council is implementing measures to contain a potential outbreak, residents should continue taking preventive measures to avoid contracting the disease.

“Prevention remains better than cure. We urge Harare residents to drink treated water regardless of the source and wash their hands under running water.

“It is important for residents to consider the food they eat by avoiding food from unlicensed vendors and eating at gatherings, as this can lead to cholera.”
