The cholera outbreak in Gokwe North is under control despite an increase in cases recorded in the last few days.
Midlands provincial medical director Dr Simon Nyadundu confirmed that a case was reported in Gumunyu area while another one was still under investigation.
“There are cumulative cases and we have now recorded nine confirmed cases. The tenth case is under investigation for links. We also have additional cases in Mutora area which are still under investigation,” said Dr Nyadundu.
He maintained that all cases were under control despite the slight increase in the recorded cases.
“All our patients have shown signs of marked improvements. We have no casualty recorded, so far so we can say it is under control,” he said.
Of the reported cases, some patients were treated and discharged while some remain admitted and under oral treatment. He said the medical team remains on the ground carrying out investigations, particularly on locally transmitted cases.
The majority of the cases recorded in Gokwe North so far are imported cases.
Gokwe North district administrator Mr Isaac Mutambara, however, bemoaned lack of resources in the district, saying they were hampering prevention measures. “We are appealing to relevant authorities to assist with resources like vehicles. Our medical staff are camped at various camp sites and they require a lot of things,” he said.
He said Gokwe North was a disaster-prone area which needed a ready vehicle for use by the Civil Protection Unit (CPU) in case disaster strikes.
