THE Minister of State for Matabeleland North Province, Cde Cain Mathema, has called on the Ministry of Finance to inject more funds into the Civil Protection Unit (CPU) as it is struggling to assist victims of Tsholotsho floods. Speaking at a ceremony where Choppies Supermarkets last week donated groceries worth $30,000 to victims of the Tsholotsho floods, Cde Mathema said the CPU was having a difficult time in reaching the victims.
“Reaching some of the remote areas such as Buabubili is a stumbling block as roads are in a poor condition. More funds must be injected into the CPU so as to speed up efforts to assist those who are in immediate need of aid. Efforts being made by the corporate world are commendable and I hope more companies can lend a hand,” said Cde Mathema.
Raj Modi, chief exeutive officer of Choppies Supermarkets, which has 13 branches around Bulawayo, said the company had a social responsibility to those in need.
“We always want to support the community in any way we can. This is an on-going process as we have a responsibility to help those in need,” said Modi.
Torrential rains have destroyed hundreds of homes in the district.
According to statistics released by CPU, last week two families in ward 7 had their homesteads completely destroyed while in wards 11 and 13 a total of 32 families were affected with two homesteads collapsing.
