Choruma surprises H’landers with sporting goods donation

FORMER Highlanders midfield general Richard Choruma on Monday made a surprise donation to his old team when he handed over an assortment of sporting goods worth thousands of dollars.Choruma, one of a rare breed of midfielders ever to don the Highlanders colours, donated a number of boots, shin guards and soccer balls, most of which will be used by the development teams.

Highlanders chief executive officer, Ndumiso Gumede, was at a loss for words about the unexpected gesture from their former player who also had stints in South Africa.

Known as “Dabuka Express” during his playing days at Highlanders, Choruma played alongside Johannes Ngodzo, Charles Chilufya and Honour Gombami, a partnership that ruthlessly bullied their opponents into submission. He was a member of the all conquering Highlanders squad that went on to win four championship titles, a feat that is yet to be achieved by any other local club in the history of Premiership football.

“When this boy (Choruma) left us, the team owed him some cents but he has still gone ahead and donated to us because he says he will forever remain grateful to Highlanders because he is what he is now because of Highlanders,” said Gumede.

He said while the donation was given to Highlanders as an institution, the club would most likely give their youngsters the equipment.

The Highlanders first team enjoys massive sponsorship from financial institution, BancABC.
