Local non-governmental organisation, Christian Care, has assisted Zaka villagers venture into commercial fish production through financing the construction of 20 fish-breeding ponds.
The fisheries project is expected to make Zaka one of the biggest fish producers in Masvingo, while also generating income for villagers.
Zaka Central Member of Parliament Cde Paradzai Chakona last week said the project, which started last year, was targeting both youths and the elderly.
“We have been assessing villagers interested in venturing into commercial fish production and I am happy that the numbers are growing,” he said.
“The fisheries project is open to everyone and I want to pay tribute to our development partner, Christian Care, who have so far constructed more than 16 ponds mainly in communities close to Siya Dam.”
Cde Chakona said Christian Care was supplying the fisheries projects in Zaka with fingerlings for breeding.
He said he will soon request for more fingerlings from the Parks and Wildlife Management Authority.
Cde Chakona urged villagers close to Siya Dam to preserve the reservoir by desisting from practices that promote pollution of the reservoir.
“The fisheries project is good for our people and if properly managed, it will generate regular income for families while enhancing nutrition in those communities,” Cde Chakona said.
