Christmas comes early for Bulawayo families

A TOTAL of 4,526 families and 17 charitable institutions in Bulawayo have received goods and food hampers worth $33,000 courtesy of the Mayor’s Christmas cheer fund. The donation included 30 wheel chairs, mealie-meal, cooking oil, rice, soap, pads, toiletries and toys.

The 4,526 beneficiaries were identified through the council’s Housing and Community Services department. Among the charitable homes that benefited are Emthunzini Wethemba, Thembiso and King Gorge Children’s Homes, Entembeni Old People’s Home and Thorngrove Central Hospital.

Handing over the donation at the Large City Hall, Mayor Councillor Martin Moyo said the generous donations received this year were a demonstration of a philanthropic spirit within the people of Bulawayo.

“The donations we received this year show that the people of Bulawayo are generous and have a social responsibility. The goods we received in cash and in kind have a total value of $33, 487.79,” said Clr Moyo.

He said despite the economic challenges faced by most people, the cheer fund was a success.
“In spite of the economic challenges, stakeholders soldiered on and donated towards the fund and the goods that you see before you this morning and the cash in the bank have a total value of this show of generosity,” Clr Moyo said.

“I also commend the corporate society that supported us in cash and kind. I also acknowledge the church fraternity for contributing through their donations in helping the needy during the festive season.”

On behalf of the charitable organisations, St Francis Matron Vongai Chimbidi expressed gratitude saying the donated goods will enhance social services in the institutions.
