TWO men were killed on Christmas eve in two separate incidents after intervening in fellow patrons’ disputes.
In the first incident, a 26-year-old Gweru man was stabbed to death at Salaco Night Club in Mtapa after intervening in a misunderstanding over a patron who proposed love to a married woman in the club.
Police in Midlands confirmed the incident.
“ZRP is investigating a murder case where Valentine Tatenda Muberekwa aged 26 of Mkoba 7 Gweru was stabbed with a knife at Salaco Night Club in Mtapa at about 2.30am on 25 December,” said Midlands provincial police spokesperson, Insp Emmanuel Mahoko.
“Muberekwa was in the company of his friend drinking beer at Salaco Night Club. Among patrons also in the night club was one Gaza and his wife, and Munyaradzi Phiri, (32) of Mtapa.
“A misunderstanding is said to have arisen when Phiri allegedly proposed love to Gaza’s wife. Muberekwa is said to have intervened in the misunderstanding and it did not go down well with Phiri, who in turn produced a knife and stabbed Valentine on the back and left armpit,” said Insp Mahoko.
After committing the offence, Phiri tried to escape, but was apprehended by members of the public who bashed him thoroughly before handing him over to the police.
He is in hospital receiving treatment under police guard.
In another incident, a 25-year-old man from Silobela also died after he was attacked for intervening in a misunderstanding over a cigarette.
Police said on December 24 at around 10.30pm, Promise Moyo, (25) of Langton Farm in Silobela, was drinking beer at Windmill Tuckshop with his cousin, Zenzo Dube.
Fredrick Sibanda, (28) of Tshabalala Village under Chief Sigodo in Silobela was also drinking beer with his friend Ricky Masuku.
Sibanda is alleged to have asked for a cigarette from Dube, who refused, resulting in a misunderstanding between the two.
Moyo tried to stop the quarrel, but that did not go down well with Sibanda and Masuku who took turns to assault Moyo.
Sibanda produced a knife and stabbed Moyo once in the abdomen and he died on the spot. The two suspects fled from the scene, but Sibanda was later arrested after a report was made to the police.
Masuku is still at large.
