Christmas joy in Trench Town

Ambassador Theatre.
The well-attended concert — put on by the Joy Town Committee Development Foundation, in association with the Tommy Cowan-led Glory Music Productions — featured gospel artistes ministering through music.

A section of the crowd at Christmas Joy in the Bass held the Ambassador Theatre on Sunday night.
Spirit-filled performances came from singers Jabez and Ziggy Soul as well as Portrait of Word Dancers.

However, the most inspirational were Carlene Davis, Goddy Goddy and Sister Scully.
Davis, who is minister of music for the St Andrew-based Family Church on the Rock, had the audience rocking with One Hand Full of Salt, This Island Need Jesus, Days of Elijah, Long Time Ago in Bethlehem and, of course, Santa Claus (Will You Ever Come to the Ghetto?).

Goddy Goddy, whose real name is Howard Reynolds, lashed out against rapists and the popular practice of skin bleaching. His performance of Try Jesus and Hold On Pon You Victory was well received by the audience.

Penultimate performer Sister Scully was the consummate gospel messenger with her rendition of both traditional hymns and revival songs, including Rock Holy, He Hideth My Soul (in the depth of His hands), I Must Have the Saviour With Me, Get Ready (Hurry Up).

On the concert’s closing leg, Prodigal Son gave a commendable performance.
The musical sermons were supported by On the Shout Band and Prodigal Radics.

Emcee Tommy Cowan was humorous with his offering of Dashing Through Trench Town with My Natty Dread, an amusing take off of Christmas coral Jingle Bells. — Jamaica Observer.
