A SOLITARY goal by Edrec Mwarare in the first half propelled Mzingwane High School to victory in the Matabeleland South provincial Copa Coca-Cola Under-16 boys’ soccer finals held at JZ Moyo High in West Nicholson yesterday.
Mzingwane beat Tongwe High 1-0 to earn the ticket to battle it out with winners from the country’s other nine provinces at the national finals set for Gwanda next week.
Tongwe High gave Mzingwane, who have dominated the Matabeleland South Copa Coca-Cola event, a scare.
Tongwe High coach Emmanuel Ramakgapola said he was happy with his boys’ performances, as it was their first time to reach this level of the competition.
“The boys played very well and I can’t complain. We lost because of a mistake by one of our defenders. We lost to a better team and we appreciate Copa Coca-Cola for sponsoring this tournament so that boys showcase their talent. Come next year we will step up the heat as we have learnt from our mistakes,” said Ramakgapola.
Mzingwane High coach Bekezela Mavundla said his boys were gunning for the national title.
“We are raring to go. Come next week in Gwanda, we will be gunning for the national championship. We have been winning the provincial championships since 2011 except last year when we were beaten by How Mine. We are the 2012 national champions so we are gunning for it again,” said Mavundla.
