Dr Tungwarara to commission Presidential Borehole Scheme in Cowdray Park

PRESIDENTIAL adviser Dr Paul Tungwarara is today set to commission the Presidential Borehole Scheme in Cowdray Park, Bulawayo, on behalf of President Mnangagwa.

The Presidential Borehole Scheme is a Government-led initiative aimed at addressing water shortages and improving access to clean and safe water across Zimbabwe. Launched in 2022, the programme targets the installation of 35 000 solar-powered boreholes in rural villages and an additional 1 000 boreholes in urban areas and constituencies countrywide.

Posting on his X account ahead of the commissioning ceremony, Dr Tungwarara described the initiative as a historic and non-partisan programme designed to ensure communities have reliable access to potable water.

He said the scheme is anchored on the belief that access to clean water is a fundamental right for every citizen and is in line with the Government’s development philosophy of leaving no person and no place behind.

Operating under the theme “Mvura Kuvanhu, Amanzi Enantwini”, the Presidential Borehole Scheme seeks to improve water security while promoting community development through the provision of sustainable water infrastructure.

Dr Tungwarara said the commissioning would mark a significant milestone for Bulawayo, particularly for residents of Cowdray Park, who are expected to benefit from improved access to water.

He invited residents and stakeholders to attend the event and celebrate what he described as an important achievement in improving livelihoods and service delivery.

“Our journey forward reminds us of our ultimate collective responsibility: Nyika Inovakwa Nevene Vayo. Let us unite to drive our country forward,” said Dr Tungwarara.

The Presidential Borehole Scheme is part of broader Government efforts to enhance water access, strengthen community resilience and support socio-economic development across the country.

Through solar-powered boreholes, the programme is expected to contribute to improved household water supply, nutrition and income generation in communities nationwide.
