Chuchu is a man of simple tastes, dreams

SIMBARASHE CHUCHU is a man of simple tastes and dreams.

Born on Christmas Day 17 years ago, Chuchu dreamt of meeting his tennis idols Rafael Nadal and the Black brothers — Baron and Wayne.

For now, he will settle for a new tennis kit.

The young lad from Kwekwe was one of the many teenage players who took part in the New Winners tournament in Harare last week.

For the teenager who had put aside his racquet to focus on his Ordinary Level exams, this was a comeback tournament.

“It’s tough being a tennis player from a relatively smaller town like Kwekwe,” said Chuchu.

“I went to Nkululeko High School, we had no courts, but that could not stop my dream.

“I would train at Kwekwe High or Kwekwe Sports Club. My dream is to play at the top local tournaments before progressing internationally,” he said.

Like many tennis players from across the world, Chuchu is inspired by Spaniard legend Rafael Nadal. Locally, he wishes to interact with the Davis Cup team.

“I would love to talk to those guys and get to know what it takes to reach that level,” he said.

“I am really determined to go far in tennis. l will put my town on the map, stars can also come from towns like Kwekwe.

“As a young boy, I am keen on United States of America scholarships. That will be a great opportunity to improve my game.

“I am really blessed to have a supportive father who sacrifices for me.”

Simbarashe’s father, Malvern, is a football fanatic, but he has taken an interest in tennis because of his son’s mad love for the game.

“When there is a tennis tourney, I can’t even watch soccer or even news,” said the Malvern.

“Moreso, my first born child is soccer crazy. I had to buy two television sets to solve the clash.

“But as a father you have to support your child’s dream, Simba loves tennis.

“At first I wasn’t really involved, but I was pushed to support him by a number of people who saw his potential.

“These include people like Mr Nyamadzawo, the former head at Tasungana Primary, Musiwa Bayana, Prudence Nyoni and coach Rudhu, to mention a few.”

Mr Chuchu revealed that he plans to fulfil his son’s birthday wish.

“It’s his birthday so I have to get him his new kit,” he said.
